Hampton Named Maxwell Award Semifinalist

CHAPEL HILL – Maxwell Football Club Executive Director, Mark Wolpert, announced the 2024 semifinalists for the 88th Maxwell Award for the Collegiate Player of the Year on Tuesday, and among the 16 semifinalists was North Carolina running back Omarion Hampton.

Selected by the Maxwell Football Club National Selection Committee, the field of Maxwell Award semifinalists includes representatives from six conferences, and features 10 quarterbacks, five running backs and one wide receiver.

Hampton has rushed for over 100 yards in eight out of nine games this season and has matched the UNC record with seven consecutive games of 100 or more yards. He ranks sixth in the nation with 130.9 rushing yards per game and already has 1,178 rushing yards through just nine games this season.

He has totaled 3,083 career-rushing yards, becoming the ninth Tar Heel to eclipse the 3,000-yard mark in rushing. He currently ranks seventh all-time at Carolina in the category.

Hampton has rushed for 13 touchdowns this season after scoring 15 times on the ground last year. His 34 career rushing touchdowns rank fourth all-time at UNC. His five total touchdowns against Florida State on Nov. 2 were the second most ever by a Tar Heel and the most since 1981.

Semifinalist voting will begin on Tuesday, Nov.12 and will close on Nov. 23. Three finalists will be announced on Nov. 26 and a finalist round of voting will take place at that time. Eligible voters include Maxwell Football Club members, NCAA head football coaches, sports information directors and selected national media. All semifinalists are listed in alphabetical order by school with the player's school, position and class designated.

The winners of the 88th Maxwell Award will be announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show, which will be broadcast live on ESPN on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2024. The formal presentation of the Maxwell Award will take place at the 88th Maxwell Awards Gala which will be held on Friday, March 14, 2025 at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, Georgia.
