Rowing Wraps Up Fall Season At Rivanna Romp

EARLYSVILLE, VA. - The Carolina rowing team wrapped up its fall season this weekend with a day of racing at the Rivanna Romp in Earlysville, Virginia, showing marked improvement over last year's results at the same competition.

"It was a huge improvement over last year and a really good day for us," head coach Erin Neppel said. "The freshmen are pumped, because this is all they know, and the upperclassmen are psyched because they know where we were just a few years ago."

The Tar Heel Varsity Eight had an impressive outing, placing fourth overall, behind only two Virginia boats and Duke's Varsity Eight, and defeating Minnesota.

Carolina made up 35 seconds on UVA's Varsity Eight compared to last year's result and trailed the Blue Devils by less than eight seconds after falling to Duke by 37 seconds a year ago at this time. Last season, the Heels fell to Minnesota by 30 seconds but outraced the Golden Gophers by six seconds this weekend.

UNC's Second Varsity Eight placed sixth overall, the second fastest Second Varsity Eight of the day. The Heels defeated Duke's Second Varsity Eight by two seconds after falling to the Blue Devils by nearly a minute a year ago.
