UNC Head Coach Hubert Davis
On Elon's 14-0 scoring run…
"A lot to learn from the entire game, I think it's an opportunity to grow and get better in a number of different areas from both ends of the floor… This is actually the perfect game and perfection position to be in because this will help us grow and help us get to be the team that we want to become… For us to be the best team we can possibly become, we have to be a good defensive team."
On Seth Trimble's selfish comment…
"No, this is not a selfish team, there is not one bit of selfishness on this team, since this team has come together.. That has never come into my mind at all."
On Ian Jackson and Drake Powell's impact in their first game…
"I thought they did some pretty good things with both Ian and Drake, in their first game, they just keep getting better every game. One of the things that people lose sight of is the transition between high school to this level is real… It takes time and I love how they have bought in defensively… I'm so glad they are here."
What the team can take away from this game…
"This really gives us a blueprint of things we have done well, but also things that we need to work on. I'm really excited at working at that and looking at things we need to improve."
RJ Davis
On team performance…
"It was a rough one for sure. I think that we got a little too comfortable, especially in the last minute and a half. That's what got Coach Davis upset. We were being careless with the ball, throwing away the ball and that's not our brand of basketball. Elon put up a good fight, they were a really good team… We have to do a better job, especially in the second half of getting stops."
On end of game approach…
"I shot the ball poorly, but my teammates kept telling me to shoot the ball. Instilling confidence in me. Once I subbed in I'm like "alright next one's gonna go in." It's the mindset I have to have because it was getting close. I put too much time and work into my shot to stop shooting.
On Elon's height in the paint…
"This is a good test for us. It was an ugly win, but a win is a win. This is something that we go watch and improve on. Elon is a good team. They were able to make it tough for us, especially in the second half when they came back to tie the game. Definitely room for improvement."
Jae'Lyn Withers
On his takeaways from the game…
"Definitely a lot to improve upon. We for sure need to work on the small details. The little things are going to be the biggest thing that we need to fix."
On Head Coach Hubert Davis…
"Coach Davis does a good job of getting us to respond. He challenges us in the midst of adversity. I think we do a pretty good job of coming forward whenever he calls."
On his jump shot…
"Coming off of last season, that was the biggest thing for me. Getting the number of reps that I needed in order to be able to just shoot that without any second thought or issues."
Elliot Cadeau
On his 3-pointers…
"I feel a lot more confident. I feel like I've put in a lot of work. It's cool to see. I'm very comfortable behind that 3-point line now."
On defensive intensity…
"I felt like it wasn't too good down the stretch. Especially the second half, we didn't play too good. It could be a lot better. It will be a lot better."
Jalen Washington
On the win…
"It's definitely good to get the experience out there. It wasn't pretty, but we came out with the win. That's all you can ask for. We'll tighten everything else up tomorrow and the rest of the week in practice."
On his intensity in the second half…
"I was just playing with passion. I wanted to come out in the first half and do that, but didn't. I fell like that was just pent up energy. There was a little bit of anger too and I just took it out on the rim."
On Friday's game at Kansas…
"I'm expecting it to be live and hostile. We want the smoke."
Seth Trimble
On early season inconsistencies…
"From the three years I have been here, we kind of start off every season like this…scrappy wins against mid major teams, even high majors. We just have to build from it. We're right back at it tomorrow."
On Elon's early second half run…
"They just hit tough shots. They converted off our missed layups and our turnovers. We had a segment where we missed layups, I missed two myself… Just need to knock down open threes and get paint touches.
On the errors in team chemistry…
"We didn't play through contact. They did a really good job of getting that in transition on our missed lay-ups and turnovers, so we gotta fix it."
On the scoring runs…
"We had a really good spurt. We went up by like 15, whatever it was. We had really good on-ball defense and applied pressure. We just didn't do that the whole 40 minutes."
Elon Head Coach Billy Taylor
On RJ Davis…
"I guess he did what he's supposed to do, you know. First-team All-American. He stepped up and made big shots, an older veteran player. He's been in these environments, he's been in tough situations, and he stepped up and made big plays."
On Elon's perseverance…
"Once you're down double digits we know Carolina is capable of taking it from 10 to 20 in a heartbeat."
On the message to the guys in the locker room …
"We want to be the best and an opportunity to play against team like Carolina is the chance to see where we're at and how we can continue to get better"
