POSTGAME QUOTES
North Carolina 93, La Salle 67
December 14, 2024
Dean E. Smith Center, Chapel Hill, N.C.
North Carolina Head Coach Hubert Davis
On an emphasis of post touches…
"It was great. That has been an emphasis for us. It felt like we have been missing opportunities to get our bigs the ball close to the basket. I feel like if we can get them close to the basket, one, they can score, and two, they could get fouled… It'll open up our perimeter players and more finishing on the offensive end."
On an increase of assists…
"It's like a .5 mentality. Soon as someone caught the ball, they either passed, drove it or shot it. There was no hesitation. I felt like the last three or four games, we weren't consistently making the extra pass, and I felt like today we did. In terms of ball movement and spacing I thought that was much better. Our willingness to just instinctively hit the open teammate, I thought we got back to what we were doing at the beginning of the season."
On the increase of open shot opportunities…
"I want to dominate points in the paint through post and penetration, and until today, we really hadn't looked at the post and it's something we're going to do even more. I believe our guys can be successful at doing it. I thought it was a good start today by getting Ven-Allen Lubin, Jae'Lyn Withers, James Brown and Cade Tyson around the basket. I think the only thing we could do better is shoot free throws."
On Cade Tyson's performance…
"The biggest thing for Cade, and really any player, is that there are ups and downs throughout the season… You have to stay focused, you have to stay connected to all of the fundamentals and all the things you do in order to get to the point where you feel confident out there on the floor… He's shown up to work every day. His preparation is fantastic, and he showed up today and played extremely well. It's not about his shot, he's a basketball player. He can rebound, he can handle the ball, he can pass and he can defend. Being able to stretch the floor and shoot from three is one of the many things that he can do, but his ability to shoot at multiple positions is a huge benefit for us and it was nice to see his shots go in tonight."
On the team's approach against La Salle…
"I turned up the level of me. We want primary, primary and if we don't have that get into secondary… There's a job and responsibility out there, there is no more 'My bad, I'll get it the next possession.' Every possession counts… Let's be detailed in our approach. And I told them, "What is detailed in our approach?" I said, tying ourselves to the small things, the disciplined details that allow us to be successful. Setting the screens, executing, getting to our spots, printing the offense, boxing out, making contact first, diving on loose balls, getting to the free throw line, talking on defense, all those things."
La Salle Head Coach Fran Dunphy
"I'm a big fan of North Carolina basketball and they obviously speed the game up. I didn't think we handled that speed as well as we could have. We made some decisions with the ball that were way too quick. Then in the second half my man [Cade] Tyson was tremendous. It was tremendous for him, but not so good for us. We didn't find him, and he was good. I'm a big Hubert Davis fan and his staff is great. It's a tremendous experience for us to be here and I hope we'll get better from this."
Ven-Allen Lubin
On smoother ball movement than previous games…
"The ball moved, we shared the ball. The ball didn't stick to us. We played selfless, and that's why we got great shots.
On Cade Tyson's breakout game…
"It was great. I'm really happy for him. I know the tough player he is, and how great he is, and so just for him to come out and show just to play like that, I'm really happy for him.
On the heightened activity of the bigs…
"We kind of did our thing, the guards trusted us to enter the ball into us to make plays, and that's what we did today. That's what coach emphasized in practice; and that's what we work on, and we just came out and do it."
Seth Trimble
On Cade Tyson's breakout game…
"It's super important. He's one of the best shooters on this team. So just to have him shoot, another bigger body, just to be able to get going, it means everything to us. Being able to play Cade more gives us more size, gives us more ability to stretch the floor. So it's huge for us."
On the offense energy…
"We just moved the ball…We were just really unselfish. When we're unselfish and we're just moving the ball and playing free, we're always just the best that way."
On the activity of the bigs…
"We haven't been rewarding the bigs enough. We haven't rewarded them from running the floor, sealing their men. We haven't rewarded them for setting screens focus and getting them open. We haven't rewarded them for getting rebounds. We haven't rewarded them for anything. These bigs, they can score in the post, they are very talented players, so we knew we had to get them more touches. So we just want to emphasize when bigs are running down the court, they post up first, and we actually look for them instead of calling for a ball screen."
On messaging throughout the week…
"[Hubert Davis] has been saying play free, play free, play you, be you. So guys just realizing that, kind of pushing that stress and what other people are saying to the side."
RJ Davis
On Cade Tyson's breakout game…
"I'm glad for Cade, the way he was able to shoot the ball and find his rhythm. He was confident. We were able to find him. And we're gonna need more of that from him moving forward."
On today's playing style…
"A lot of baseline drives and side drives, being able to find one more man. We really just played Carolina basketball today."
Cade Tyson
On finding his playing style…
"It's been pretty frustrating. But I try to keep my confidence high and just focus on getting better every single day. Don't worry about the uncontrollable."
On his attitude for today's game…
"I felt good all week through practice and whatnot. I just feel like I've been getting a lot of extra work in and feeling more confident about my extra work."
On support from Elliot Cadeau…
"It was awesome. I feel that in practice a lot. It was a little different with being out there with a bunch of fans, but it's still the same special moment in practice as it is out there with the guys."
On adjusting after transferring…
"It's always tough. Change is tough. But I think my teammates and my coaches and just the people in my circle did a good job of helping me handle it and work through it, and that's what I strive to continue to do."
