Faasse Chosen As MAC Hermann Trophy Semifinalist
December 4, 2024 | Women's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina women's soccer standout Kate Faasse has been named one of the 15 semifinalists for the prestigious MAC Hermann Trophy, as announced by United Soccer Coaches and the Missouri Athletic Club on Wednesday. The award is the most coveted individual honor in NCAA Division I soccer.
Semifinalists were determined based on voting by DI women's soccer coaches, and three finalists will be named on Dec. 11. The 2024 MAC Hermann Trophy banquet will be held on Jan. 3, 2025, at the historic Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis. Fans are encouraged to vote for their favorite player here.
Faasse is the first Tar Heel to be named a MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist since Brianna Pinto during the 2020-21 season. Pinto went on to be a finalist that year.
Carolina has had six players win a combined eight Hermann Trophies, the most by any school. The last recipient was Crystal Dunn in 2012.
The honors keep rolling in for Faasse, who was also named to the United Soccer Coaches All-Atlantic Region First Team, All-Atlantic Coast Conference First Team and ACC All-Tournament Team. She checked in at No. 10 on Top Drawer Soccer's Midseason Top 100 Players list.
Faasse is in the midst of a breakout junior season, as the forward is tied for first in both the ACC and NCAA with 19 goals. Her 41 points also lead the conference and ranks fourth in the country. She has seven game-winning goals – including the golden goal in the NCAA Quarterfinals – which ranks first in the league and fourth in the nation.
Her 41 points and 19 goals are the most by a Tar Heel in a single season since Casey Nogueria had 58 and 25, respectively, in 2008. Faasse is the eighth UNC player to record 40+ points in one year since the turn of the century.
Faasse has five braces on the year, three which have come during postseason. She is the first UNC player to have 3+ braces in one season since Alessia Russo had five in 2019. In fact, only three Tar Heels have had 3+ braces in a single season in the last decade: Faasse (5, 2024), Russo (5, 2019) and Bridgette Andrzejewski (4, 2016).
The Phoenix, Arizona native has started all 25 games thus far and ranks third on the team with 2,121 minutes. Prior to this season, she had never started a collegiate match and totaled 949 minutes in her previous two years combined. Faasse surpassed her point total from her freshman (6) and sophomore (7) seasons just 10 games into the 2024 campaign.
The Tar Heels advanced to their 32nd College Cup in program history after Faasse scored the game-winning golden goal in a 2-1 overtime victory over Penn State on Nov. 29. They will take on Duke in the national semifinals on Friday, Dec. 6, at approximately 7:30 p.m. ET at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary.
