Experimental Rules And New Initiatives In Place At The Bosh In 2024
February 15, 2024 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The NCAA Baseball Rules Committee has approved the use of a pair of experimental playing rules by the ACC during conference play. The experimental rules are approved only for the 2024 season during conference play.
The ACC has also instituted a few rule changes of its own, involving a 10-run rule and series doubleheaders to benefit the health of the student-athlete.
Below is a list of the experimental and new rules in place for the 2024 season:
The Batter's Box (Experimental)
The batter is required to be in the batter's box and alert to the pitcher with eight seconds (0:08) remaining on the 20-second action clock. The current rules require the batter to be in the batter to be in the box and alert to the pitcher with 10 seconds remaining.
Pitches Between Innings (Experimental)
A pitcher will be provided an unlimited amount of warm-up pitches during the time between innings (2:00) or during a pitching change (2:30). The current playing rules limit the number of warm-up pitches between innings to five for pitchers who were previously in the game and eight when a relief pitcher enters.
Series Finale Doubleheaders
When a doubleheader must be played on the last day of a scheduled series, the teams will play one seven-inning game followed by a nine-inning game. If the first game goes more than seven innings, the second game of the doubleheader will revert to a seven-inning game. A doubleheader on any other day of the scheduled series will be scheduled as two nine-inning games.
10-Run Rule
A 10-run rule will be in effect after the seventh inning of all ACC games. The rule stipulates that the game shall be stopped after seven innings if one team is ahead by at least 10 runs run in accordance with NCAA playing rules.
120 Seconds Between Innings
There will be 120 seconds between innings. The time between innings will start when all defensive players have started to leave their position once the final out has been made. When the time has expired, the pitcher must be holding the ball and touching the pitching rubber and the batter must be standing in the batter's box ready to hit. The umpire will summon the batter to the box with 30 seconds remaining on the clock. Extra time will be allotted if the catcher makes the final out of the previous half inning.
Visible Pitch Clock
Two pitch clocks have been installed behind home plate and one in left-centerfield at Boshamer Stadium. The 20-second action clock begins when the pitcher has possession of the ball in the circle surrounding the pitcher's rubber while play is "alive." The clock begins when the home plate umpire signals "play" after a ball becomes "dead" (ex. ball goes out of play, time is called, etc.). One "reset" is allowed per at-bat.
