UNC Head Coach Hubert Davis
On Clemson's play:
"We just didn't play well enough. You really have to compliment Clemson and the way that they played. They're a really good basketball team and extremely well coached. They were deserving of winning tonight."
On his team's response to tonight's play:
"We always talk about reacting and responding when things don't go your way and when things do go your way. And the importance of two things: always showing up to work and not being perfect, nobody's perfect, but also…to be the best that you can be."
On his message to the team going into this game?
"We're able to be successful on Saturday and we have a game here on Tuesday. You know, just the game in the regular season, we needed to move forward and continue to grow, continue to get better, and that was my message. It doesn't matter who's in play. There is a schedule out there and we have more games left, that means we have to play through, which means that we have to prepare for playing. It falls in line with all the things that I say about keeping your eyes straight ahead and ignore the sideshow distractions and focus on what is real and what is real design improvement and how we grow as a team."
On where to go after the loss:
"It's how you react and how you respond. We'll go back to work, and as I've said before there's two things that you can do. You can whine and complain and point fingers and make excuses. Or you can get back up and move forward and join the fight. And for us, it's never a choice. It's a requirement for us to get back up and let's get back to work."
On other team's defense on RJ Davis:
"I would say the last couple of games teams have been very physical with him [RJ Davis] and a lot of things defensively not just individually but as a team to make it very difficult for him to get free."
Armando Bacot
Opening Statement:
"We got what we deserved. That wasn't what we wanted. I wasn't happy with how we practiced and with some of the things we did. I guess that is an emotional thing and a lot of stuff goes into it, but at the end of the day, we have a job to do and have to come in and play. Today we definitely learned that lesson. The hungrier team won. Coming into this game, Cormac has been telling us that Clemson is desperate for a win; they need this win to keep their season alive. If they don't win this game, then it's a tough situation. They were hungrier. They beat us at everything."
RJ Davis
On the effort/Learning experience:
"We just didn't battle or bring any energy tonight, any effort. That's on us. I don't think I've ever seen us just go out there without any energy to be able to compete."
"I think this is a game that we can definitely learn from moving forward and how we prepare leading up to games."
"We didn't come out and play our best basketball today and didn't have the energy that was needed for us to win this game. That's unusual for us and that's going to change moving forward."
On trying to come back from the bad first half:
"We dug ourselves in a hole in the first half and tried to get ourselves out of it in the second half, but by then it was too late."
On Seth Trimble being out:
"Seth is a huge impact for us, especially defensively. Just his energy is infectious throughout the whole locker room."
Harrison Ingram
On the effort:
"I think they were just the hungrier team that came out from the beginning and really had nothing to lose. They played harder than us. They bullied us. They played better defense and better offense. They were just the better team."
On something feeling off:
"It started in the warmup. We were late. We didn't have the best warm up. There wasn't the same energy. We had a few guys out, but the energy in general just felt off. We were down and everyone was sleepy and we just weren't ready to go from the beginning."
On the difficulty against the zone:
"We have a lot of zone plays but we really weren't executing well. Their zone was giving us problems and their coach recognized that and he kept going to it and we couldn't score."
Paxson Wojcik
On the slow start:
"If you give a team like that confidence, they're capable of playing with that confidence for the full 40 minutes. We should have come out hungrier than we did and maybe we would have had a better start."
On the zone:
"I don't think we drove the gaps or swung the ball or made shifts as much as we should have. Then they went man with around ten seconds in the shot clock and I think the changing defenses really bothered us."
Clemson Head Coach Brad Brownell
Opening Statement:
"Well, certainly a great way for our guys. Really happy for my players, we've had some close losses here recently. I've said many times, I think we are playing better than our ACC record, our league is good and I don't think it's getting the credit it deserves in some ways and we haven't finished some games and today we were able to do that. Obviously a great start, probably the better half we have played all year long, we just held on. The crowd was great. They got some life and came back and certainly our guys finished, which was really nice to see. So, really happy for my players. We've been working really hard and they stayed connected and to stay positive through some of the adversity."
On Clemson's defense:
"We mixed in some zone and I thought it helped us at times, and other times it wasn't as effective as we would have liked. I just thought we competed and our offense helped our defense. We only had five turnovers. You turn the ball over, and take a lot of bad shots, then Carolina is going to get out and run against you. We had a good mix to our offense, certainly a lot of threes early. I thought we were cutting and moving and the ball was moving extremely well, but we got tired at times. And then North Carolina came after us, which they are going to do in this environment, it's hard to play in… we're very fortunate to get the win and Carolina is playing unbelievably well. Hubert has done a great job, so this was a terrific win for us."
