OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – UNC's first varsity four earned a big win and Tar Heel boats picked up five second-place finishes on Saturday, the first day of racing at the season-opening Cardinal Invitational at Melton Lake.
In the afternoon session, the varsity four – junior coxswain Cara Cunningham, freshmen Lucy Rush and Kenzie Gartland, and sophomores Sydney Tuck and Anna Lily Laborde – beat Alabama, Wisconsin and San Diego to take first with a time of 7:34.341 and provide the day's highlight. That boat also turned in a second-place finish in the morning session with a win over Clemson.
The 2V8 registered the most exciting finish of the day, battling back from about seven seats down with 500 meters remaining. A sprint to the finish gave Carolina a win over Clemson and a second-place finish. The 2V8 picked up another second in the afternoon, beating Wisconsin and USD.
"Today was a good first day of racing for us this spring," UNC coach Erin Neppel said. "Definitely a step in the right direction, but we know we have a lot of work ahead of us. Kudos to the V4 for a good win today – they did a great job. We're looking forward to another opportunity in the morning against some quick crews."
The Tar Heels are back on the water Sunday morning, facing off against USD and host Louisville starting at 9:38 a.m.
