UNC Closes Out Cardinal Invite With Successful Morning
March 17, 2024 | Women's Rowing
OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – North Carolina closed out its first weekend of rowing in the 2024 spring season with four first-place finishes at the Cardinal Invitational Sunday morning. Competing at Melton Lake, Carolina's first, second and third varsity fours and the second varsity eight all took wins, while the varsity eight placed second and the third varsity eight placed third. Â
Â
"It was a great chance to finally get to line up against some other teams this weekend," UNC coach Erin Neppel said. "Every one of our crews learned a lot about racing and had some solid opportunities to be side-by-side all the way down the course, which was fun for us.
Â
"Congrats to our 2V8, V4, 2V4 and 3V4 on their wins today – we'll rest up tomorrow and get right back to it Tuesday morning. A lot more to do this season."
Sunday morning's action followed a successful Saturday in which the Tar Heels picked up a win in the varsity four and earned five second-place finishes on the first day of spring racing. The varsity four – junior coxswain Cara Cunningham, freshmen Lucy Rush and Kenzie Gartland, and sophomores Sydney Tuck and Anna Lily Laborde – beat Alabama, Wisconsin and San Diego to take first with a time of 7:34.341 and provide the day's highlight. That boat also turned in a second-place finish in the morning session with a win over Clemson.
Â
The Tar Heels now get two weeks of work before competing again. Next up is a trip south for the Sunshine State Invitational on March 29 and 30 in Sarasota, Fla.
