Baseball Doubles Up GT To Clinch Series Win
March 23, 2024 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Parks Harber hit a go-ahead, two-run double as part of a four-run seventh, and No. 20 North Carolina defeated Georgia Tech 11-5 on Saturday to clinch the series, following its 5-4 win Friday.
Harber belted a three-run home run, going 3-for-5 with five RBIs and three runs scored. Vance Honeycutt homered, hit two doubles, stole two bases, and drove in three. Gavin Gallaher had two RBIs.
The Tar Heels (20-4, 6-2 ACC) recorded their 22nd consecutive win at Boshamer Stadium and improved to 18-0 at home.
"Vance, who had some tough nights, had a great one," UNC head coach Scott Forbes said. "Parks Harber had a double and a big home run; distribution throughout the lineup is key for us."
After Honeycutt doubled to lead off the seventh, Anthony Donofrio singled to right and drove in Honeycutt to tie the game at 5-5. Alberto Osuna singled, and Alex Madera laid down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position.
Harber doubled down the left field line, scoring both runners and putting the Tar Heels ahead to stay.
Kyle Percival (3-0) pitched two scoreless relief innings and struck out four after Georgia Tech (16-6, 3-2) had retaken the lead in the fifth. He struck out the side in the sixth.
"I felt like [striking out the side] put the momentum back in our dugout," Percival said.
Five UNC pitchers combined to strike out 15 Yellow Jacket hitters, including UNC stater Jason DeCaro, who struck out six in 4.1 innings.
Percival and Matt Poston held the Yellow Jackets without a hit over the final four innings. Poston earned the save with two shutout innings and three strikeouts.
Tech scored three runs in the fifth off just one hit, as Carolina pitchers issued four walks. Carson Kerce drew a bases-loaded walk to plate the first run, and Trey Yunger followed with a two-run single.
Kerce scored a run in the third after reaching on an error to lead off the inning and then drove in a run during the fourth to tie the game after Honeycutt belted a two-run homer in the bottom half of the third.
Yunger collected three hits and two RBIs.
Tate McKee (2-2) took the loss, allowing four runs and five hits in 2 2/3 innings after starter Aeden Finateri gave up four runs on five hits with three walks in 3 2/3 innings.
The Tar Heels and Yellow Jackets will wrap up their three-game series Sunday, March 24, at noon. The game will be televised on ACC Network.
