Baseball Falls To South Carolina, 2-1

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Dylan Brewer drove home the game-winning run with a double in the eighth, and South Carolina topped No. 13 North Carolina 2-1 at Truist Field on Tuesday.
The Gamecocks (23-10) used four pitchers to hold the Tar Heels (26-7) to six hits.
UofSC got on the board first with a run in the third after loading the bases with one out. Gavin Casas grounded out to first, and Ethan Petry plated the first run. Dalton Pence struck out Talmadge LeCroy to end the inning, stranding two runners.
Pence replaced UNC starter Folger Boaz in the third after Boaz exited the game after the athletic trainer was summoned to the field. Boaz pitched 2 1/3 innings and struck out three.
Pence retired five of six batters faced, allowing just one hit in 1 2/3 innings. Aidan Haugh followed with three scoreless innings and struck out a career-high seven, including the side in the fifth and sixth.
Colby Wilkerson tied the game with a two-out double to right in the seventh, scoring Gavin Gallaher from first.
LeCroy drew a leadoff walk to start the eighth and moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt by Dalton Reeves before scoring the winning run.
The Tar Heels put the tying run in scoring position with two outs in the eighth but could not drive it home.
Connor McCreery (2-0) struck out five in 2 1/3 innings and surrendered one hit to earn the win, fanning two in the ninth to close the game.
UNC pitchers struck out 15 Gamecock batters and walked just three. Matthew Matthijs (11-2) took the loss, allowing a run, hit, and walk in one inning pitched.
The Tar Heels return to Boshamer Stadium this weekend to take on Notre Dame in a three-game ACC series. Game one of the series is scheduled for Friday, April 12, at 6 p.m.
