Baseball Duo Named Semifinalists For Dick Howser Trophy
May 16, 2024 | Baseball
DALLAS – UNC junior outfielder Vance Honeycutt and sophomore pitcher Matthew Matthijs have been named two of the 68 semifinalists for the Dick Howser Trophy, which is given to the top player in collegiate baseball based on two rounds of national voting by NCBWA members. Finalists will be announced on Thursday, June 8.Â
Honeycutt is hitting .333 with a 1.167 OPS, 22 home runs, 27 stolen bases and 57 RBIs. He ranks second in the ACC in home runs and stolen bases and is the only 20-20 player in Division I heading into the final weekend of the regular season. Honeycutt is the lone player to rank among the NCAA's top 25 players in home runs, runs, and stolen bases.
Matthijs is tied for the NCAA lead in victories with 11. He has made an ACC-best 28 appearances this season with a 3.95 ERA and 43 strikeouts in 43 1/3 innings. Opposing hitters are batting .253 against him.

The Dick Howser Trophy, presented by The Game Headwear, is given in memory of the former Florida State University All-America shortstop and major league player and manager who died of brain cancer in 1987. The trophy is regarded as baseball's most prestigious award. Criteria for consideration of the trophy include performance on the field, leadership, moral character, and courage – all qualities that were exemplified by Dick Howser's life.
The '24 award will be presented at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, the home of the College World Series, for the 12th year. The winner will also be unveiled on MLB Network on Thursday, June 13, at 9 a.m. (CDT) highlight show hour. A Friday, June 14, news conference with the winner will be held at 10 a.m., the opening day just prior to the first game of the 77th NCAA College World Series, in the Schwab Stadium Media Room.
The No. 7 Tar Heels (39-11, 20-7 ACC) return to ACC play tonight at No. 11 Duke (34-16, 15-12). The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will be televised on ACC Network. Games two and three of the series on Friday (6 p.m.) and Saturday (1 p.m.) will be streamed on ACC Network Extra. All three games will be available on the ESPN app, with radio coverage available locally on WCHL (97.9 FM/1360 AM) and free live audio at goheels.com.
