Kayla Smith shot 1-under 71, the lowest round of the day for the University of North Carolina in round one of the 2024 NCAA Championship Friday at the Champions Course at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.

Smith, a fifth-year senior from Burlington, N.C., made three of UNC's seven birdies in the opening round to shoot her 14^th round below par this season.

The Tar Heels shot 13-over-par 301.

Freshman Ing Iadpluem shot 74, Megan Streicher and Inez Ng both posted 76s and Crista Izuzquiza finished with an 82.

Round two is Saturday. The Tar Heels, who began Friday's opening round at 7:30 a.m. Pacific time, will tee off in the afternoon wave.
