RALEIGH, N.C. – Tar Heel boats will compete in three of five grand finals on Saturday following the first day of racing at the Atlantic Coast Conference Rowing Championship at Lake Wheeler. On Friday, UNC's varsity four, second varsity four and third varsity eight all punched tickets to the grand finals. The varsity eight and second varsity eight will race in the petite finals.
"The team did a nice job today doing what we asked them to do to position themselves well for tomorrow," coach Erin Neppel said. "They came out aggressively and raced to the line against some very fast ACC teams, and we are proud of their efforts.
"Kudos to the fours and the 3V8 for making the grands. The finals are going to be fast and furious, so we have a big job ahead of us, but they have put themselves in it."
Friday morning's heats took place in gorgeous weather at Lake Wheeler, UNC's home away from home. The day started with the third varsity eights, with Carolina taking third in its heat in 7:07.532.
Tar Heel boats were fourth in heats for the other two eights.
In the varsity four, UNC placed third in its heat in 7:46.270, the sixth-fastest time overall.
In the second varsity four, the Tar Heels crossed in 8:06.634, third in the heat and sixth overall.
Duke, Notre Dame, Syracuse and Virginia qualified boats for all five grand fnals. Clemson, Miami and UNC qualified for three each. Virginia, which has won 13 consecutive ACC Rowing titles, had the fastest time in four of the five events.
The top three boats from each preliminary race qualify for the grand finals, while the other three boats will compete in the petite finals. The petite final will be held prior to the grand final of each event. The order of events includes the Third Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Four, Varsity Four, Second Varsity Eight and Varsity Eight.
Saturday's finals of the 2024 ACC Rowing Championship will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra from 8-10:30 a.m.
Racing begins on Saturday at 8:05 a.m. and admission to the park is free.
