June 27, 2024 | Men's Lacrosse
SPARKS, MD. – Six North Carolina men's lacrosse players have been invited to the upcoming U.S. Men's U20 National Team Training Camp, USA Lacrosse announced Thursday.
Rising sophomores Owen Duffy, Peter Thomann and Brady Wambach, as well as incoming freshmen Parker Hoffman, Luke Macaluso and Mason Szewczyk were named to the training camp roster this afternoon.
The Tar Heel group is part of a 77-player pool, which will head to USA Lacrosse Headquarters in Sparks, Md. for a three-day tryout, from June 28-30.
Duffy, the 2024 ACC Freshman of the Year, tied for a team leading 32 goals and 54 points, as well as being second on the Tar Heels with 22 assists. His 32 goals tied Robin Beran (1973) and teammate Dominic Pietramala (2024) for the most in a single season by a freshman in program history.
In 2024, Duffy had seven games with three-or-more goals and seven games with five-or-more points.
Thomann started all 14 games this spring for the Tar Heels at close defense, leading Carolina with 21 caused turnovers. The Merrick, N.Y. native became the first Tar Heel freshman defensive player since 2022 with five-or-more ground balls in a game, and the first Carolina defenseman since 2021 with at least three caused turnovers and five ground balls in a game since 2021. In the season finale win over Duke, Thomann's five caused turnovers was the most by an ACC player during the regular season.
Wambach also appeared in all 14 contests for Carolina, winning a team best 146 faceoffs. His effort at the faceoff stripe was the third most faceoff wins by a Tar Heel freshman in program history. Wambach had eight double-digit faceoff win performances this year, highlighted by 16 wins each against Army and Duke.
The Pittsford, N.Y. product ended the 2024 campaign with a .611 faceoff win percentage, fifth best in the country. Wambach helped the Tar Heels faceoff group finish the season with the nation's top faceoff win percentage.
The 2025 U.S. Men's U20 National Team will represent the United States at the world championship next summer, in Seogwipo, South Korea from July 18-27.
