Tar Heels Will Meet Dayton In Maui Invitational First Round

The University of North Carolina men's basketball team will play Dayton in the opening round of the 40th annual Maui Invitational on Monday, November 25, at the Lahaina Civic Center. The tournament returns to Lahaina after a one-year absence following the tragic fires there on August 8, 2023.
The Tar Heels will be playing in the Maui Invitational for a record eighth time and are looking to win the prestigious early-season tournament for the fifth time.
UNC is second in Maui Invitational history with four championships, taking the title in 1999-2000, 2004-05, 2008-09 and 2016-17. Carolina subsequently advanced to the Final Four in all four seasons when it won the Maui Invitational, including NCAA championship-winning seasons in each of the last three occasions.
Carolina and Dayton will tip at approximately 11:30 p.m. Eastern Time (6:30 p.m. Hawaiian Time) on ESPN2 in the final game of the first day of the tournament. The Tar Heels and Flyers are in the latter half of the bracket along with Auburn and Iowa State. Colorado, UConn, Memphis and Michigan State play in the early side of the bracket.
The 2024 Maui field includes seven teams that played in the 2024 NCAA Tournament, including UConn, which repeated as the NCAA champion.
Carolina is 22-4 overall in the Maui Invitational, including an 18-3 record in Maui (also 2-0 in Chapel Hill in early round games and 2-1 in Asheville in 2020, when the tournament relocated due to Covid-19).
