Home Stretch For Women’s Soccer Begins Against Georgia

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Fresh off a 2-0 start to the season after a weekend road trip out west, the fifth-ranked North Carolina women's soccer team returns to Chapel Hill to host No. 16 Georgia on Thursday, Aug. 22, for the 2024 home opener. 
Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. ET at Dorrance Field and the game will stream on ACCNX with Cedric Burke and Dean Linke on call. It will be the first ranked matchup for the Tar Heels this season.

Following the retirement of Anson Dorrance – the Tar Heels' first and only women's soccer head coach to date – on Aug. 11, associate head coach Damon Nahas will serve as interim head coach while UNC Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham conducts a national search.
Nahas is in his ninth complete season at UNC this year. Dorrance has high praise for him, saying that "Damon is the best coach I've ever seen. I think he's the best soccer coach in the country, and I include myself in that circle."

Ten Things to Know:
- Carolina is 41-2-2 all-time in home openers, and also remains undefeated in home openers at Dorrance Field since its opening in 2019.
- This will be the sixth meeting between Carolina and Georgia in program history with UNC leading the all-time series at 5-0. This will be the third game played in Chapel Hill.
- The Tar Heels have out-scored the Bulldogs 23-1 all-time. The largest margin of victory was a 9-0 shutout in 2001 during the first-ever meeting.
- The last meeting between the two teams was a 3-1 win in the second round of the 2022 NCAA Tournament. UNC went on to a national runner-up finish that year.
- UNC checked in at No. 5 in this week's United Soccer Coaches poll. The team has been ranked for 514 consecutive weeks.
- Junior Kate Faasse was the hero of Sunday's game at Colorado. She scored twice – once in the 88th minute and again in the 90th – to give UNC a 3-2 win. It was her first career brace.
- Carolina opened its season with a 2-1 victory at Denver last Thursday after goals from Tessa Dellarose and Bella Sember.
- Asha Means joins Dellarose and Sember as this year's team captains.
- Junior forward Maddie Dahlien was named to the U.S. U-20 National Team which will compete in the 2024 FIFA U-20 World Cup from Aug. 31-Sept. 22 in Colombia. She left for her national team duties on Aug. 20 after playing the first two games of the season.
- Two former standouts in Crystal Dunn and Emily Fox won gold with Team USA in Paris. It was the USWNT's fifth Olympic gold; at least two Tar Heels have been on all five of those rosters.
