Field Hockey Opens Season With Win At Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The UNC field hockey team opened its season Friday evening with a 4-1 win at Michigan in ACC/Big Ten Challenge play at the Wolverines' Ocker Field. After a scoreless first quarter, the Tar Heels (1-0) scored twice in the second, spotted UM a goal just after halftime, then added additional goals in the third and fourth, all from different scorers.

The Tar Heels took the lead midway through the second on a goal by senior Lisa Slinkert, assisted by junior Ryleigh Heck. They added another in the 26th minute on a run by sophomore Charly Bruder.

Michigan scored early in the third to make it a 2-1 game.

UNC again went up by two in the 44th minute when junior Sietske Brüning capitalized on the second opportunity off a penalty corner. UM pulled its keeper in the final minutes of play and sophomore Sanne Hak scored into the empty net to make it a 4-1 final.

Although Michigan led 5-1 early in shots, the Tar Heels finished with an 18-12 advantage, including an 8-1 edge in the second quarter.
