September 1, 2024 | Field Hockey
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – After plenty of first-half chances, the UNC field hockey team finally broke open a scoreless game early in the third quarter and went on to beat No. 6 Iowa, 2-1, in ACC/Big Ten Challenge play at Michigan's Ocker Field.
After UNC led, 14-1, in shots in the first half (11-0 in the second quarter) and 7-0 in penalty corners without a score, the Tar Heels finally capitalized quickly after halftime. On the first shot of the period, 3:27 into the action, sophomore Charly Bruder came up with her second goal of the weekend to put Carolina up. Less than three minutes later, Ryleigh Heck – who also set up Bruder's shot – sent a pass to sophomore Sanne Hak to make it a 2-0 Tar Heel lead.
Iowa scored in the 51st minute on its only penalty corner of the game. UNC keeper Abigail Taylor made the initial save but Jacey Wittel scored off the rebound to put the Hawkeyes within one.
