2024 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup Starts This Weekend
August 30, 2024 | Women's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Three current and former members of the North Carolina women's soccer team – Maddie Dahlien, Savy King and Ally Sentnor – are set to compete with the United States Under-20 Youth National Team at the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup. The event runs from Aug. 31-Sept. 22 in Colombia.
Currently a junior, Dahlien is one of 12 college players on the U.S. U-20 roster. Sentnor and King – the respective No. 1 and No. 2 overall draft picks – make up two of the eight pros currently playing in the National Women's Soccer League.
Dahlien, King and Sentnor were part of the Concacaf qualifying roster in 2023 that secured the USWYNT's spot in the U20 World Cup. Already with World Cup experience is King who was on the U17 roster and Sentnor who played on the U20 squad, both in 2022.
Sentnor, a forward, enters the tournament as the USA's most-capped player and top scorer with 16 caps and nine international goals. Fellow forward Dahlien has scored four times in her eight appearances while King has 12 caps as a defender.
This is the 11th FIFA Women's World Cup for the U20 age group, all of which have featured the USA. This year's tournament will feature the most nations participating in the event's history with 24. The USA and Germany have each won the tournament three times.
The 24 participating nations were drawn into six groups of four teams. The top two finishers in each group, along with the four best third-place teams, will advance to the Round of 16 on Wednesday, Sept. 11, and Thursday, Sept. 12.
The winners of the Round of 16 matches advance to the Quarterfinals on Sunday, Sept. 15, from which the winners will advance to the Semifinals on Wednesday, Sept. 18. The bronze medal match will be held on Saturday, Sept. 21, with the gold medal game taking place on Sunday, Sept. 22.
All matches will take place at four stadiums in three cities in Colombia: Bogotá's El Campin Stadium and El Techo Stadium, Cali's Pascual Guerrero Stadium and Medellin's Atanasio Girardot Stadium.
All matches of the tournament will be broadcast in English on the FOX Sports family of networks and online on FoxSports.com with corresponding authentication and in Spanish on the Telemundo networks.
