VB Caps Off Undefeated Weekend With Straight-Set Victory Over Western Carolina

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Carolina volleyball team capped off an undefeated 3-0 opening weekend with a sweep of Western Carolina (25-13, 25-17, 25-10) on Sunday afternoon in Carmichael Arena. All three of the Tar Heels' victories have been in straight sets.
The Tar Heels were serving fire from the service line, racking up 12 service aces, led by senior outside hitter Mabrey Shaffmaster who matched her career-best with five aces. Graduate setter Taylor Eisert and sophomore setter Zoe Behrendt each had three apiece.
Serve-receive was also top-notch, with Carolina holding the Catamounts to zero aces in the match.
The Tar Heels out-hit Western Carolina .322-.092, hitting a match-best .515 as a team in the third set.
Sophomore outside hitter Safi Hampton paced the offense with a match-best 11 kills on a .474 hitting clip, while redshirt sophomore middle blocker Chelsea Thorpe contributed 10 kills.
Behrendt and Eisert combined for 34 of Carolina's 41 assists, while Thorpe set a new career-best at the net with five block assists. Junior libero Maddy May racked up 16 digs and five assists.
The Tar Heels hit a combined .338 in three matches and out-served their opponents 22 aces to 2.
Carolina will look to carry this weekend's momentum into next when they travel to Columbia, S.C. for a pair of games against Temple and South Carolina.
The Heels will face the Owls on Saturday at 3 p.m.
