U.S. Falls To Reigning World Champ Spain In FIFA U20 World Cup Opener
September 1, 2024 | Women's Soccer
CALI, Colombia – The United States U20 Youth National Team opened the 2024 FIFA U20 Women's World Cup with a 1-0 loss to reigning world champion Spain after conceding an early goal on Sunday afternoon at Estadio Pascual Guerrero in Cali, Colombia.
Three current and former members of the North Carolina women's soccer team – Maddie Dahlien, Savy King and Ally Sentnor – are vying for gold at the FIFA U20 World Cup, which runs Aug. 31-Sept. 22.
Wearing the captain's armband, Sentnor started the match against Spain and logged a full 90 minutes, as did King. Dahlien subbed in during the 73rd minute. The full box score can be found here.
Currently a junior at UNC, Dahlien is one of 12 college players on the U.S. U-20 roster. Sentnor and King – the respective No. 1 and No. 2 overall draft picks – make up two of the eight pros currently playing in the National Women's Soccer League.
Dahlien, King and Sentnor were part of the Concacaf qualifying roster in 2023 that secured the USWYNT's spot in the U-20 World Cup. Already with World Cup experience is King who was on the U-17 roster and Sentnor who played on the U-20 squad, both in 2022.
Sentnor, a forward, is the USA's most-capped player and top scorer with 17 caps and nine international goals. Fellow forward Dahlien has scored four times in her nine appearances while King has 13 caps as a defender.
