The Tar Heels remain undefeated in the 2024 campaign with a 6-0 record while the Pirates drop to 2-3-1.
How It Happened
- North Carolina promptly got into attack mode, forcing Seton Hall keeper Anna Prawer to make a pair of early saves within the first five minutes of play.
- One of the better initial looks was in the fifth minute when Sember's strike was saved by Prawer with Dellarose there for the rebound, but her attempt at a quick lead just barely missed the net.
- Dellarose then got the go-ahead goal in the 23rd minute after VAR confirmation. Aria Nagai's corner bounced off Dellarose on the right side of the six-yard box, and an SHU defender failed to clear it in time before Dellarose was able to tap it in with just enough power to cross the goal line.
- Momentum swung in the Tar Heels' favor after they got on the board with five more shots falling; UNC ended the opening frame with a 13-1 advantage, including 7-1 on target. The teams finished the half with UNC up 1-0 before a 90 minute weather delay halted play.
- Once action resumed, the Tar Heels picked up right where they left off by controlling possession and penetrating in the box, but the Pirates' defense made it challenging to break through.
- The constant offensive pressure paid off in the 58th minute when UNC doubled its lead. Linda Ullmark squared the ball back into the 18-yard box where Sember received the pass. Using crafty footwork to separate herself from her defender, Sember created space to send a low left-footed strike to the back of the net.
- Goalkeeper Clare Gagne, who has played every minute between the posts this season, made two big saves in the final 16 minutes of play to preserve the shutout.
Inside the Box Score
- Dellarose and Sember both netted their third goals of the season. They now have eight and seven points, respectively.
- The Tar Heels finished with 23 shots and held a 10-4 edge in shots on goal. They have taken 19 or more shots every game this season, and have kept all its opponents to five shots on goal or fewer.
- The Pirates, who had been averaging 13.2 shots per game, were limited to only six. Carolina has not allowed more than 11 shots all season.
- Gagne matched her season-high four saves between the posts.
- Five Tar Heels in Gagne, Emerson Elgin, Ullmark, Kate Faasse and Dellarose logged a full 90 minutes.
