DURHAM, N.C. – Taking on No. 14 Duke for the first time since the 2024 College Cup, No. 19 North Carolina women's soccer (9-4, 3-3 ACC) fell 3-2 to the Blue Devils (8-3-1, 3-3 ACC) on Sunday afternoon from Freeman Field at Koskinen Stadium.
Both teams took early chances on goal in the opening minutes, yet couldn't reach the back of the net. Locked up with both defenses shutting down one another, UNC and Duke wrapped the first 45 knotted at 0-0 all.
Duke converted in the 48th minute on a goal to the right corner by Carina Lageyre, as the Tar Heels searched to find the equalizer. The Blue Devils tacked on their second goal of the day in the 52nd minute to go ahead 2-0.
With Carolina still looking to make offensive noise, the Blue Devils kept a high tempo pace to earn their third goal of the afternoon to remain ahead 3-0 in the 74th minute.
Despite a goal from Eres Freifeld and an own goal by the Blue Devils in the final minute, it was too much for the Tar Heels to overcome, falling 3-2 to Duke.
