Tar Heel Men Climb In Final Fall ITA Rankings
November 29, 2025 | Men's Tennis
Three University of North Carolina singles players and a pair of doubles teams grabbed spots in the final fall rankings released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on November 25.Â
Carolina set a program record with five total NCAA qualifiers this fall. The three Tar Heel singles qualifiers tied the most in school history, as did the two doubles teams that qualified for the NCAA Championship.
On the singles side, senior Roan Jones finished the fall ranked #56. He reached the NCAA Singles Championship round of 32 earlier this month in Orlando, winning his initial NCAA match after qualifying for the national championship based on his performance at the ITA East Sectional in early November.
Junior Niels Ratiu lost his initial NCAA Singles Championship match but still finished the fall ranked 83rd by the ITA. One slot behind Ratiu, standout freshman Ian Mayew ended the fall individual season ranked #84 after he also qualified for NCAAs but lost his first-round match.
In doubles, Ratiu and sophomore Chris Xu won the ITA Carolina Regional doubles title in October to qualify for the NCAA Doubles Championship. In their first NCAA match in the round of 32, Ratiu and Xu took #8 Spencer Johnson and Emon van Loban Sels of UCLA to a third-set tiebreaker before falling, 3-6, 6-3, 0-1 (8). Ratiu and Xu finish the fall and will enter the spring ranked #44 in the nation.
The talented freshman duo of Mayew and Kase Schinnerer finished the fall ranked #83 in doubles by the ITA. Mayew and Schinnerer, who were a doubles team on the junior circuit prior to enrolling together at UNC this fall, beat Adam Chodur and Otto Schreiner of BYU in their first-round NCAA match. They fell in the round of 16, coming up one win short of earning All-America status in their first few months as a collegiate team.
With a stellar fall now in the rear-view mirror, the Tar Heels will turn their attention to the 2026 dual match season, which will begin in mid-January with indoor play.
