CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After leading the Atlantic Coast Conference and finishing the regular season tied for eighth nationally with 10.5 sacks, North Carolina defensive lineman Melkart Abou Jaoude has been named a Second Team All-ACC Selection, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Linebackers Khmori House and Andrew Simpson, along with wide receiver Jordan Shipp and kicker Rece Verhoff were tabbed Honorable Mention All-ACC.
The All-ACC teams were chosen by a voting panel of 65 media members and each of the league's 17 head coaches for a total of 82 voters.
Abou Jaoude turned in one of the best seasons by a UNC defensive lineman in program history, as his 10.5 sacks tied with Hilee Taylor for the sixth most in a single season. He started all 12 games, recording 47 tackles – the fourth most on the team.
He was named ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week earlier this season after tallying a game-high six tackles with 2.5 tackles for loss, two sacks and a forced fumble at Syracuse. Additionally, Abou Jaoude had three sacks in a game twice this season, accomplishing the feat against Virginia and Stanford.
In addition to his sack total, Abou Jaoude had 12 tackles for loss, five quarterback hurries, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
In his first season as a Tar Heel, House was voted a team captain and started every game at linebacker for Carolina. He tallied a team-high 81 tackles with 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack. The Pasadena, California, native intercepted a pass against Stanford and ended the season with seven pass breakups.
House led the Tar Heels in tackles seven times this season, highlighted by a career-best 13 tackles against Stanford.
Simpson had an immediate impact in his final season of collegiate eligibility, starting every game and finishing the year as Carolina's second-leading tackler with 62. He notched nine tackles for loss with five sacks and six quarterback hurries. Simpson picked off a pass against Virginia and forced a fumble against Stanford.
Shipp was the Tar Heels' leading receiver with 60 catches for 671 yards and six touchdowns. He found the end zone in four of Carolina's last five games compiling 351 yards on 31 catches during that span.
Hailing from Charlotte, North Carolina, Shipp recorded his first multi-touchdown game against Richmond with four catches for 52 yards and a pair of scores. He had a career-long 55-yard touchdown run against Stanford to lead the Tar Heels to the victory.
Verhoff was an integral part of UNC's special teams unit this season and led the team in scoring with 77 points. He was 19-for-23 on field goals and a perfect 20-for-20 on extra point attempts.
Against Wake Forest, Verhoff set the program record with a 57-yard field goal as time expired in the first half. His boot was two yards longer than Dan Orner's 55-yarder against Syracuse in 2002, which stood as the previous best. His kick was tied for the longest by any kicker in the ACC this season.
Verhoff's 19 field goals made were tied for the fifth most at UNC for a single season.
