Following a standout debut season at North Carolina, junior defensive lineman Melkart Abou Jaoude has been named an Associated Press Second Team All-ACC selection, the organization announced Monday.
Abou Jaoude turned in one of the best seasons by a UNC defensive player in program history, as his 10.5 sacks led the ACC and ranked fifth nationally at the conclusion of the regular season. That mark also tied with Hilee Taylor for the sixth most in a single season in Tar Heel history.
According to Pro Football Focus advanced metrics, Abou Jaoude played 646 snaps, the most by a defensive lineman in the ACC. He started all 12 games, recording 47 tackles – the fourth most on the team.
He was named ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week earlier this season after tallying a game-high six tackles with 2.5 tackles for loss, two sacks and a forced fumble in Carolina's 27-10 win at Syracuse. Additionally, Abou Jaoude had three sacks in a game twice this season, accomplishing the feat against Virginia and Stanford.
In addition to his sack total, Abou Jaoude had 12 tackles for loss, five quarterback hurries, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
The Newton, N.J., native also garnered second team All-ACC honors from the conference office as well.
