Offense Powers Softball Past Coastal Carolina, 16-11

The Tar Heels jumped in front right away when Carlie Myrtle came up to the plate with the bases loaded and had a bases clearing double to make it 3-0 with no one out. A few batters later Raeghan Carlson connected for a single on the first pitch she saw to make it 4-0.
Coastal responded with two of its own in the bottom half of the first, making it 4-2.
Kiannah Pierce continued her hot start to 2025 with a two-RBI single in the second to put UNC back up by four.
In the third Carlson came back up, again only saw one pitch, this time she sent a ball to deep left field for the second home run of her career, putting the Tar Heels up 7-2.
The third inning runs kept coming, this time Kat Rodriguez brought Grace Jackson home. Sanaa Thompson had a sac-fly to score Alex Coleman, then Myrtle picked up a single to score Rodriguez and UNC had a 10-2 lead.
The Chanticleers would battle all the way back, taking an 11-10 lead in the bottom of the fifth after back-to-back four run innings.
Now facing some pressure, Carolina immediately responded with three runs in the sixth to jump back in front 13-11. In the seventh the Tar Heels would pad their lead, plating two more runs to go ahead 16-11.
Nikki Harris shut down the Coastal bats in the seventh to seal the win.
In her first start of the year, Raeghan Carlson was a triple away from the cycle, going 4-5 with two RBI.
Carlie Myrtle also showed out going 4-5 with two doubles and five RBI.
Carolina has a quick turnaround, facing Drexel in a doubleheader tomorrow to kick off the Tar Heel Invitational.
