CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Two North Carolina women's soccer freshmen – Aven Alvarez and Hope Munson – have been named to the 20-person U.S. Under-19 Women's National Team for a trip to Spain from Feb. 15-27.
Alvarez and Munson, both defenders, will suit up for the Stars and Stripes for the L'Albir U-19 Women's International Tournament. This includes matches against U-19 National Teams from the Netherlands, England and Spain.
Players born on or after Jan. 1, 2006, are age-eligible for this U-19 WNT cycle and the 2006 birth year will form the core of the team that will attempt to qualify for the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Poland. This group of players – all born in 2006 – will transition to the U.S. U-20s in August of this year.
Alvarez, who was part of UNC's 2024 national championship team, appeared in all 27 matches and played every minute of the College Cup. She finished the year with one goal and one assist while helping hold opponents to 8.0 shots and 3.8 shots on goal per game.
A native of New Hill, N.C., Alvarez earned bronze with the U.S. U-19 National Team at the 2023 Pan American Games in Chile.
Munson arrived in Chapel Hill in January as a mid-year enrollee. The Holladay, Utah native played for Olympus High School and Utah Avalanche ECNL. She totaled 50 goals and 29 assists in high school and led her team to the state championship as a senior.
Additionally, four Tar Heels have earned roster spots on the U.S. Women's National Team for the 2025 SheBelieves Cup. The SheBelieves Cup takes place in Houston (Feb. 20), Glendale, Ariz. (Feb. 23) and San Diego (Feb. 26).
Crystal Dunn, Emily Fox and Ally Sentnor are on the 23-player roster for the SheBelieves Cup set to begin later this month. Savy King was named to the training squad that will be with the team for the duration of the tournament.
This is Dunn's ninth SheBelieves Cup, Fox's fifth and first for Sentnor and King.
Dunn '13 and Fox '20, both defenders, were key members of the USWNT which won gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Dunn has the second-most caps (155) and goals (25) on the roster. Dunn recently signed with Paris Saint-Germain and Fox plays for Arsenal FC.
Sentnor '23 earned her first USWNT cap on Nov. 30, 2024, in front of 76,000 fans at Wembley Stadium in London. The forward was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NWSL Draft and had a standout rookie season with the Utah Royals. She helped Team USA earn bronze at the U-20 World Cup and was the 2024 U.S. Young Female Player of the Year.
King '23 was the No. 2 overall selection in the 2024 NWSL Draft by Bay FC and will play for Angel City beginning this season. The defender earned 12 starts last season as a rookie with Bay FC, capping off her first professional year with a pair of assists.
