Full Team Effort Sees Carolina To Comfortable Win To Open Series Against Stony Brook
February 28, 2025 | Baseball
The Tar Heels (10-0, 0-0 ACC) spread its season-high 17 hits across 11 different players as head coach Scott Forbes was able to show his team's tremendous depth. The guys off the bench combined to hit .800 with three runs, four hits, and five RBIs.
Preseason All-American Jason DeCaro came into the 2025 season with all the hype pointing to him elevating his game to be one of the best arms in the entire country. He's done nothing but live up to those expectations in his three outings so far.
In this contest with the Seawolves, he threw a career-high 7.2 innings while only allowing four hits and one run (the first he's given up this year). On the season, he has a 0.50 ERA with 13 strikeouts and a .145 batting average against.
Leadoff man Kane Kepley continues to embody everything you want from your first man up. His team-leading .580 on base percentage only ballooned today, as he added three hits and another hit-by-pitch in his first four plate appearances against Stony Brook on Friday. He has reached safely in nine of his late 10 attempts, stealing four bases and scoring five runs.
True freshman Perry Hargett, fresh off his impressive debut against NC A&T in the midweek, was rewarded for his efforts with his first career start. He did not disappoint. In his first at-bat, he handed Stony Brook ace Eddie Smink his first home run of the season with a moonshot over the left field fence.
The first 400 first homer of the year for the Tar Heels also meant Hargett became the first to hit homers in consecutive at-bats since Vance Honeycutt did so in last year's Super Regional.
Sophomore third baseman Gavin Gallaher is finding his form after a slow start to the campaign. The Apex, N.C., native went 3/5 on Friday with three RBIs and two runs scored. In the bottom of the fourth, he smacked a double off the wall in right-center that brought in two before later executing a double steal with Tyson Bass to take home.
The most recent Carolina player to steal home prior to today was Gallaher when he swiped the bag against William & Mary on May 1, 2024.
The Tar Heels will look to secure the series against Stony Brook on Saturday at the Bosh at 2 p.m. ET. There will be no live stream available for the game so fans are encouraged to make it to the game or listen to the audio stream on goHeels.com/watch.
