Women’s Lacrosse Embarks On 2025 Season Against James Madison

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The fourth-ranked North Carolina women's lacrosse team will return to the game field for the first time in 273 days on Friday, Feb. 7, in Chapel Hill as the Tar Heels play host to No. 18 James Madison to kickstart the highly-anticipated 2025 season. First draw is set for 5 p.m. ET.
The game at Dorrance Field will air on ACCNX with Zach Berly and former UNC standout Kara Cannizzaro on call. Tickets are available for purchase here.

Ten Things to Know
- Friday is the 18th meeting between North Carolina and James Madison in program history with the Tar Heels leading the series at 12-5. UNC is 6-1 in Chapel Hill.
- This is the 11th meeting between the two teams during a season opener. UNC leads 7-3 during those season openers and is undefeated at home.
- The Tar Heels begin the season ranked No. 4 in the USA Lacrosse and Inside Lacrosse preseason polls. They were picked second in the Atlantic Coast Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll.
- Kaleigh Harden, Brooklyn Walker-Welch and Marissa White were named to the Preseason All-ACC Team. It's the second such honor for White, and in back-to-back years. All three players make their return after being sidelined by injury in 2024.
- Walker-Welch was named USA Lacrosse Preseason All-America First Team while Darcy Felter, Caroline Godine, Ashley Humphrey and White were named Honorable Mention. UNC's five selections are tied for second-most in the nation. Walker-Welch was also named Preseason All-America First team by ILWomen.
- UNC has the No. 1 freshman class and the No. 1 overall freshman for the second year in a row. Six of the top 18 ranked rookies are Tar Heels: Addison Pattillo (No. 1), Kate Levy (No. 3), Eliza Osburn (No. 6), Charlotte Corkins (No. 12), Lexi Zenk (No. 15) and Tess Calabria (No. 18).
- Carolina also welcomed in the No. 1-ranked transfer class. The team has six transfers, including ILWomen's Top 20 Impact Transfers in Sarah Gresham, Nicole Humphrey and Olivia Vergano. Humphrey returns to Chapel Hill for her final year after a standout career from 2020-23.
- Walker-Welch (No. 4), A. Humphrey (No. 26) and White (No. 30) were on IILWomen's Top 50 Returning Players list. Walker-Welch is the No. 1 defender.
- UNC returns 64.4% of all goals, 74.8% of all assists and 66.8% of all points from 2024. Top statistical returners from last year include Kiley Mottice (33 goals) and A. Humphrey (38 assists, 57 points).
- Jenny and Kate Levy are the first mother-head coach/daughter-player duo in Division I women's lacrosse history. North Carolina is one of two DI schools with three sisters (Humphreys) on the 2025 roster, and the only one with those sisters in different classes.
