BLACKSBURG, VA.—North Carolina hit a season-high 15 three-pointers and cruised to a big road win, 91-59, at Virginia Tech on Tuesday night at Cassell Coliseum, bolstering its NCAA Tournament credentials in the final week of the regular season.
Carolina closed the first half on a 15-1 run, then extended its lead by starting the second half, 14-6. UNC secured its 65th 20-win season and fourth in four years under head coach Hubert Davis.
Five Tar Heels scored in double figures, led by 19 points from Ian Jackson, who tied his season high with five three-pointers in eight attempts. Carolina extended its season-best winning streak to six games and improved to 20-11 overall, 13-6 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Hokies fell to 13-17, 8-11.
Seth Trimble added 17 points, RJ Davis scored 15 on 5 of 6 shooting, and Ven-Allen Lubin posted his first double-double at Carolina with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Elliot Cadeau had 12 of the team's season-high 24 assists.
The Tar Heels continued their recent hot shooting, hitting 58.9 percent of their shots collectively. UNC has shot at least 55 percent in each of the last three games, the first time it's done so since the first three games of the 2009-10 season.
Carolina is 74-17 all-time vs. Virginia Tech, including 21-7 since the Hokies joined the ACC. UNC is 10-1 this season and 31-2 under Hubert Davis when scoring 90+ points.
Carolina is 56-23 in ACC regular-season games under Davis, the second-most ACC wins by any team in the last four seasons.
