Blue Devils Top Baseball, 9-5
April 4, 2025 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Carolina baseball dropped the middle game of its weekend series against Duke 9-5 on Friday night in Boshamer Stadium.
Â
The Tar Heels (23-8, 7-7 ACC) played a back-and-forth affair with their rivals from up the road, but the UNC bats couldn't quite keep pace with the Blue Devils. 14 hits is the most Carolina has given up this season.
Â
Jackson Van De Brake carried the momentum from his big night in game one of the series into Friday's contest. Moving up the lineup into the five hole, he smoked a two-out double to the wall in left center that scored a pair and put Carolina up 2-0 in the bottom of the first.
Â
With the game tied back up at two in the second inning, Gavin Gallaher lined a solo shot just over the left field fence. It was his fourth homer of the season, and it put the Heels back in front 3-2.
Â
Duke took the momentum the rest of the way however, scoring five unanswered before Hunter Stokely got two back for UNC on a bases-loaded single that cut the score to 7-5. A pair of solo home runs added to the Duke lead that eventually settled at 9-5.
Â
Usually the most reliable unit in the Carolina arsenal, the pitching staff never truly found their groove on Friday night. Cameron Padgett was the best of the bunch, coming in for 4.0 innings of relief and allowing just four hits, one run, and no walks.
Â
Tonight's result sets up a rivalry rubber match on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Boshamer Stadium. The Tar Hels have won each of the last five series against the Blue Devils.
