Men’s Fencing Leaves Beguinet Classic 5-0

DURHAM, NC - Men's Fencing closed out the regular season with a dominant record of 5-0 at the Beguinet Classic on Saturday, Feb 7. Fencing took down three ranked opponents: No. 9 Penn State, No. 11 Boston College, and No. 13 NYU.
Opening the day, Carolina secured a closely contested 15-12 win against Brandeis. The men's epee squad made the difference, posting a dominant 7-2 record. Youssef Shamel and Brayden Gyure combined for a flawless 5-0 showing.
Epee and foil combined forces for a strong showing for the first-ranked victory of the weekend against Boston College, 15-12. Shamel and Gyure combined again for another 5-0 record for the second straight match.
For the fourth straight match, Carolina has come out on top against No. 9 Penn State, 14-13, behind sabre and epee's winning records. On the eve of senior day, the senior saberists Nicky Wind and Elden Wood's 4-0 record, along with John Lin's 2-0 record, separated Carolina for the win.
Carolina had its best showing in the final ranked win of the day, taking down No. 11 NYU 16-11. Sabre led with a match-best 6-3 record, while all three weapons finished with winning records.
For the fifth and final win of the day, Carolina took down Air Force 18-9. Shamel and Wood led the charge with two wins a post.
The women's team will fencer tomorrow at home at Eddie Smith Field House at 8:00 a.m. EST.
