Joined the Tar Heels as a walk-on in spring 2000. Earned all-state honors in 1998 as a defensive lineman. Also played tight end at Richmond County High School where he played for his dad, Daryl Barnes. Two-time all-conference in football and on the all-conference academic team. Had 83 tackles, including seven quarterback sacks, as a senior. District 5 Scholar Athlete of the Year in 1998-99. Member of state championship teams in 1997 and 1998. The 1998 team was ranked No. 2 in the nation. Defensive captain in 1998. Also played four years in baseball and two seasons of basketball. Born Jeremy Alan Barnes on Oct. 5, 1980. Favorite teams are the Carolina Panthers and Philadelphia Phillies. Favorite athletes are Warren Sapp, John Randle and Ron Gant. Says the word that best describes him is "underdog." Likes to play golf, fish and play cards.
