Considered one of the top offensive linemen in the ACC • Should challenge for all-conference honors this season • Considered undersized for a center by some critics, but has great lateral movement and is an excellent blocker.
2000 • Junior Season
Started every game at center and was one of the Tar Heels’ most consistent offensive lineman • Played 739 snaps, an average of 67 per contest • Had a team-high 28 knock down blocks and seven “will breakers” • Was named the UNC coaches top offensive lineman three times – at Wake Forest, at Florida State and vs. Clemson • Played a season-high 79 snaps in UNC’s 20-17 win at Pittsburgh.
1999 • Sophomore Season
Appeared in six games as a backup at center • Played a season-high 50 snaps in the third week against top-ranked Florida State • Also played against Indiana, Clemson, Houston, Maryland and Duke • Had nine “domination” blocks.
1998 • Freshman Season
Was activated in the Florida State game after injuries to centers Cam Holland and Bryant Malloy left the Tar Heels with just one center • Played in three games a total of 18 snaps • Played against FSU, Maryland and Duke.
Williams High School
Three-time all-conference lineman at Walter Williams High • Named all-conference on both sides of the ball in each of his last two seasons • Had 66 solo tackles as a senior, including 22 for losses and seven quarterback sacks • Forced seven fumbles, recovered five and blocked two punts • Played for Coach Sam Story. Started in the Shrine Bowl • Played in the East-West All-Star Game • Regional defensive player of the year as a junior and senior.
Personal
Born Adam Montgomery Metts on April 20, 1980 • Majoring in history • His father, Carey, earned All-ACC honors at center in 1968 at NC State and starred on the famous 1967 "White Shoes” team • His uncle, Billy Bryan, was an All-ACC and All-America center at Duke in 1975-76, won the Jacobs Blocking Trophy and started for the Denver Broncos • His brother, Carey Jr., earned All-ACC honors in 1989 at center playing for Coach Steve Spurrier at Duke, and his brother, Bryan, plays tackle at Appalachian State • His grandfather starred at Elon College.
