The University of North Carolina Sports Performance program consists of the Sports Medicine, Athletic Performance and Sports Nutrition departments. Its mission is to provide medical coverage optimizing health, safety and performance.
SPORTS MEDICINE
PHILOSOPHY
The University of North Carolina Sports Medicine staff is charged with the responsibility for all matters pertaining to the health and welfare of the student athlete. The staff is committed to providing world class patient care, education, service and research to intercollegiate student athletes as well as students, faculty and staff on the UNC campus. We will utilize all resources available to promote the success of Tar Heel Athletic teams.

The sports medicine staff assumes the responsibility for all matters affecting the health and safety of the student athlete. This includes:
- Pre-participation physicals and Screenings
- Injury evaluation, management, rehabilitation and referral
- Implementation of Emergency Action Plans
- Return to competition decisions
- Use of protective equipment
- Nutritional needs and concerns
- Maintenance of safe playing fields and facilities
- Safe practice procedures and conditioning activities
- Monitoring environmental conditions
- Any matter that would affect the health or safety of the student athlete.
Sports medicine is an integral part of the health care team at Carolina whose staff provides a unique service essential to the quality health care of the athletic population at UNC. The Sports Medicine Division will utilize any and all of the resources available to identify players' predisposition to injuries, implement programs to prevent injuries, provide emergency care for injuries, diagnose injuries and conditions, and rehabilitate injuries in order to return players to full participation as quickly and as safely possible. ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE
The University of North Carolina’s Olympic Sports Strength & Conditioning staff is committed to enhancing the overall experience of its student-athletes. Program design is based on an athlete-centered, sport-appropriate model. Practical and purposeful training ensures each student-athlete will not only achieve long-term gains in athleticism for competitive success, but do so in an environment that cultivates enthusiasm, discipline, leadership, and teamwork.
