Young & Umerah All-Americas; Masciarelli & Paige Advance To Finals

EUGENE, ORE- On the second day of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Carolina had four athletes competing.
Kosi Umerah and Spencer Young both made their NCAA Championships debuts, earning All-America honorable mention in the women's hammer throw and javelin, respectively.
Umerah is the first hammer thrower to make it to the NCAA Championships since Jill Shipee in 2022. Young was the second straight javelin thrower to compete at the NCAAs, as Kate Joyce advanced last season.
On the track, both runners advanced to the finals. Sydney Masciarelli (9:44.72) led the pack in the first heat for nearly the entire race as she coasted into her first career finals. Masciarelli finished second in the first heat and eighth overall.
Makayla Piage is the first Tar Heel since Alice Schmidt in 2002-2004 to advance to back-to-back finals in the women's 800m. The entire qualifying field for the women's 800m ran under two minutes. Paige has now run under 2:01 twelve different times in her career. She has now run under two minutes at the NCAA Championships in her last three races.
