Versatile athlete who has contributed on offense, defense and special teams. Played safety for two and one-half seasons before moving to quarterback for two games last fall. Would have started several games at quarterback last year, but his season came to a premature end due to illness. Will play quarterback in 2000. Has scored touchdowns in college by recovering a blocked punt, by fumble return and by interception return.
Very athletic player who has a strong throwing arm. Adept at running and passing. Lacks experience playing quarterback. Has not started a game at quarterback since 1995. Did a good job learning the new offensive system installed in the spring.
1999 -- Junior Season
Played five games at safety, including one start, and two games at quarterback. Missed the final four games due to mononucleosis. Moved to quarterback after Ronald Curry was injured in the fifth game. Compiled 36 total offense yards against Houston and 128 total offense yards at Maryland. Led Carolina on its only touchdown drive in the loss at College Park. Completed one of two pass attempts for 11 yards and rushed four times for 25 yards against Houston. The following week at Maryland he rushed 16 times for 57 yards and completed 10 of 21 passes for 128 yards. Was slated to start the October 30th game against Furman, but he became ill the week of the game.
He played the first five games at safety and compiled 15 tackles. He had two interceptions and broke up one other pass. Returned an interception 89 yards for a touchdown in the final minute of the second quarter against Virginia. It was the third-longest interception return in UNC history. He also had an interception against Florida State. He made a season-high five tackles against Indiana and the Seminoles. Black returned four kickoffs last year for an average of 30.2 yards. He had a 43-yard return at Indiana and a 34-yarder at Clemson. The return against Indiana set up a UNC touchdown. Played on 226 snaps, including 68 at quarterback (nine against Houston and 59 at Maryland).
1998 -- Sophomore Season
Played in all 12 games and started at safety in nine regular-season games. Saw action on 442 snaps in the regular season. Was ninth on the team in tackles with 63. That included 24 solo tackles and 39 assists. Had a tackle for a loss for two yards against Georgia Tech. Returned a botched field goal attempt 81 yards for a touchdown on the final play of the first half against the Yellow Jackets. Made a season-high eight solo tackles and 16 total hits against Miami. Returned three kickoffs for 51 yards.
1997 -- Freshman Season
Played in all 11 regular-season games and the Gator Bowl. Played on 160 snaps in the regular season. Made nine tackles, including three against Duke. Returned a blocked punt seven yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter of Carolina’s 28-17 win over Stanford. Score came with 5:42 to play in the game. Was the Tar Heels’ leading kickoff returner. Had 11 returns for 248 yards, an average of 22.5 yards per return. His long return of the year was 35 yards at Maryland.
Daniel High School
Participated in the 1995 Shrine Bowl. 3-A Offensive Player of the Year in South Carolina. 1995 all-state selection. Named All-Western 3-A Conference his last two seasons. Starting quarterback both his junior and senior seasons. Also started at defensive back and played wide receiver as a sophomore. Guided Daniel to a 14-1 record and a state championship as a senior. Rushed 190 times for 1,121 yards and 26 touchdowns. Threw for 1,702 yards and 11 touchdowns. Coached by Allan Sitterle, who also coached former UNC record-setting quarterback Mark Maye. Earned three letters in basketball, averaging 12 points per game. Earned five track letters. Named to the honor roll during every grading period.

Born Antwon Travor Black on Dec. 14, 1977. Favorite pro teams are San Francisco 49ers and Toronto Raptors. Favorite athletes are Vince Carter, Terrell Davis and Deion Sanders. Greatest athletic achievement was the 89-yard interception return against Virginia in 1999. Post-college ambition is to teach kids. Says the word that best describes him is "bold." Wants to become a more consistent player. Likes the leadership role in playing quarterback. Likes to work out, collect movies and help others. Majoring in exercise and sport science.
