Henry Baker joined the North Carolina football coaching staff in 2018.
Baker, who was a four-year letterwinner at Maryland, comes to Carolina after serving as cornerbacks coach at Rutgers during the 2017 season.
“We are excited to bring Henry to Chapel Hill to join our staff,” head coach Larry Fedora said. “He adds a unique perspective having both coached and played in the ACC, and I know he will bring great energy to our staff as a coach and as a recruiter. We welcome Henry, Theresa and their three children into the Tar Heel family.”
“I’ve played against UNC and I’ve coached against UNC, and the atmosphere here has always been electric,” Baker said. “To now be in Carolina Blue, this is truly an exciting time for me and my family. I can’t wait to get started.”
A native of Paterson, New Jersey, Baker spent six seasons as the cornerbacks coach at Delaware prior to his stint at Rutgers. The Blue Hens were fifth nationally in total defense during the 2015 season and ranked in the top 25 at the FCS level in both passing yards allowed and interceptions in 2016.
Baker was a two-year starter at defensive back at Maryland, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology in 2003. He began his coaching career as a recruiting intern at his alma mater in 2001 before spending four seasons as a high school assistant at South Miami (Fla.) and Eastside (N.J.). Baker then returned to College Park for two seasons as a defensive and special teams assistant under Ralph Friedgen. The Terrapins went 8-5 in 2008 and won the Humanitarian Bowl during that stretch.
Baker spent the 2010 season at East Stroudsburg University, serving as the defensive backs coach, before joining the staff at Delaware. He has also coached in the professional ranks, spending time with several Arena Football League franchises, including the Carolina Cobras. Baker served in the Bill Walsh NFL Minority Coaching Fellowship with the Detroit Lions during the 2015 preseason camp and in 2016 with the New York Giants.
Baker and his wife, Theresa, have a son, Khari, and two daughters, Kaila and Khloe.
