2002: Was North Carolina’s starting place-kicker in all 12 games • Connected on 9 of 14 field goal tries and 26 of 27 point after attempts • Tied an NCAA record with three field goals of at least 50 yards in Carolina’s 30-22 victory at Syracuse • Broke the school record with a 55-yard field goal against the Orangemen and also hit 51- and 52-yard field goals in that game • Connected on a 47-yard field goal as time expired to give Carolina a dramatic 23-21 win over Duke and perserve Carolina’s 12-game winning streak over the Blue Devils • The game-winning kick was the first by a Tar Heel since Lee Gliarmis beat Maryland in 1983 • Hit a 47-yard field goal in the win at Arizona State and made a 49-yarder vs. Clemson • Made 26 extra point attempts in a row until missing his final attempt in the win at Duke • Only missed one field goal inside 40 yards (32) • Other misses were from 44, 49, 50 and 53 yards.
Prior: Transferred to Carolina from Michigan State prior to the start of the 2001 season • Sat out the 2001 season as a transfer student • Did not kick in a game as a member of the Spartans.
Warwick Valley High School
Played football, soccer, baseball and track, earning 16 letters at Warwick High School • Was voted the school’s best male athlete as a senior • Was one of the top 50 players in New York as a senior • Earned first-team All-Tri-County honors and was an all-state selection as a senior • Selected to compete in the Governor’s Bowl All-Star Game • Made 8 of 10 field goals, including a career-best 49-yarder as a senior • Coached by Greg Sirico • Earned all-state honors in soccer as a junior and was all-state in baseball as a senior • Member of the honor roll for three years.

Born Daniel Burke Orner on October 17, 1980 in Warwick, N.Y. • Has one older brother, a younger brother and a younger sister • His brother, Ryan, ran track at Towson State • Worked at kicking camps across the country during the summer • Hobbies include sports, music and cars • Favorite NFL team as a kid was the New York Giants • Favorite former Carolina player is Lawrence Taylor • Best friend on another team is UCLA’s David Bone • Majoring in exercise and sports science.
