Joined the team as a walk-on quarterback in 1999. Moved to tight end in the spring 2000. Played four seasons at quarterback and tight end at East Bladen High School in Elizabethtown. Played for Coach Lenon Fisher. Earned all-conference honors as a senior in football and baseball and as a junior in basketball. Named the top male athlete in the county as a senior. Threw for 1,500 career yards. Played four seasons of basketball and three in baseball. Was graduated fourth in his class with a 4.2 grade point average. Was a semifinalist for the Morehead Scholarship. Born Darren Mitchell McPhail on Jan. 7, 1981. Favorite athletes are Sammy Sosa, Drew Bledsoe and Vince Carter. Post-school ambition is to work for ESPN.
