One of the most experienced offensive linemen on the squad. Has battled injuries throughout his career. Competes hard every play. Coach Steve Marshall describes him as a real warrior, playing through pain and injuries last year. Should start at left guard.
1998 • Junior Season
Split time with James Wagstaff at left offensive guard. Played in all 11 regular-season games and the Las Vegas Bowl. Started against San Diego State in the bowl game. Saw action on 457 plays. Had a season-high 55 plays against Wake Forest, 52 against NC State and 50 against Clemson. The Tar Heels were 3-0 in those games. Carolina rushed for 213 yards in the win at Wake Forest and 197 in the win over NC State.
1997• Sophomore Season
Started every game at left offensive guard. Saw action on a total of 643 snaps. Played a season-high 78 snaps against Virginia. Was the lone underclassman starter on the offensive line. Helped Carolina average 378.9 yards a game and 27.8 points per game.
1996• Freshman Season
Saw action in the 1996 season opener against Clemson and also played against Wake Forest, Maryland, Houston and NC State. His most extensive action was an 18-play effort in Winston-Salem. Was red-shirted in 1995.
Central Bucks West High School
Team rushed for over 200 yards in all but one game his senior year. A first-team all-state choice. Played on three straight conference championship squads. His teams were 33-4 in his three years there, winning one Eastern Pennsylvania title and finishing as state runnerup. Coached by Michael Pettine.
Personal
Born Michael Charles Gimbol on Dec. 8, 1976. Majoring in physical education. His father, Michael, played football at Washington State. Favorite pro teams are the Philadelphia Flyers, Phillies and 76ers. The people who have influenced him the most are his parents. The most difficult part of playing his position is listening to Coach Marshall. Says the best thing about his position is listening to Coach Marshall. Homesick for Philly Cheesesteaks. Says the word that best describes him is "alternative."
