Made a lot of improvement toward the end of spring practice. Needs to become more aggressive in a leadership role to earn more playing time. Has good physical tools, especially speed. Has a good understanding of the defense. Competing with DeFonte Coleman as top reserves at free safety. Working hard to improve his tackling.
Played in all 11 games as a sophomore in 1999. Saw action on special teams and at safety. Played 118 snaps, including a season-high 17 against Wake Forest and Duke. Played 10 or more snaps in six of the 11 contests. Made two tackles. Made stops against Indiana and Maryland.
Injured his knee in the first week of spring practice in March 1998 and missed the entire 1998 season. Was red-shirted in 1997.
Tuscola High School
Three-time First-Team Mountain Athletic Conference selection and three-time All-Western North Carolina pick. Played halfback, safety, cornerback and returned kicks. Played for Coach Doug Brooks. Scored 44 touchdowns, made 314 tackles and picked off 14 passes in his career. NationsBank Outstanding 3A-4A Male Athlete of the Year in Western North Carolina in 1997. Set a school record with 334 yards rushing in one game as a junior. Tied a state record with two punt returns for touchdowns in the same game. Led the basketball team in scoring and earned all-conference honors in each of the last three years. School’s alltime leading scorer in basketball. MVP of his school’s track team as a runner in 1997. Member of the National Honor Society. North Carolina Scholar.

Born Nathan G. Sutton on Oct. 23, 1978. Majoring in sociology. Favorite pro teams are the Atlanta Braves and Carolina Panthers. Other favorite sport is basketball. Hobbies include camping, hunting and fishing.
