The Most Improved Player on defense this past spring. Has blocked punts UNC recovered for touchdowns in each of the last two postseason bowl victories. Is aggressive and a good open field tackler. Has good cover skills. Pound for pound is one of the strongest players on the team. Will have to provide solid leadership for an inexperienced secondary.
1998 • Sophomore Season
Played in all 12 games, including the Las Vegas Bowl. Saw action on 251 snaps. Played a season-high 38 snaps at Wake Forest and 37 against Maryland. Made 28 tackles, including 19 primary stops, and broke up four passes. Had a season-high eight tackles (five primary) at Duke. Made seven tackles (four primary) and broke up two passes at Wake Forest. Also had pass breakups against Georgia Tech and Virginia. Had three primary tackles against NC State. Blocked a punt in the Las Vegas Bowl that David Bomar recovered for a touchdown to give UNC a 20-7 lead early in the second quarter. Broke up a pass in the bowl game.
1997 • Freshman Season
Played in every game at safety and on special teams. Blocked a first-quarter punt in the Gator Bowl that was picked up by Dre’ Bly and returned for a touchdown to give Carolina a 16-0 lead. Also made two tackles in the bowl game. Saw action on 188 regular-season plays with a high of 26 snaps against Maryland and 25 against Duke. Made one of the key plays of the season when he blocked a punt against Stanford late in the fourth quarter. The punt was returned for a game-clinching touchdown. Made 12 tackles, including three against Duke. Was red-shirted in 1996.
Thomas Jefferson High School
Top vote-getter on the 1995 Denver Prep League All-Conference squad. Played safety as a senior and cornerback as a junior. Led the Denver Prep League with seven interceptions and broke up 13 passes. Had more than 200 yards in interception returns. Coached by Oliver Lucas. Moved to Bethel High School in Hampton, Va., after Thomas Jefferson’s ninth game of the season.

Born Quinton Allan Savage on Dec. 26, 1977. Majoring in communications. Favorite pro teams are the Los Angeles Lakers and Atlanta Falcons. Favorite athletes are Michael Jordan and Nikki Teasley. Greatest athletic achievement was blocking a punt against Stanford in 1997 and beating NC State last year. The people who have influenced him the most are his mother and his high school coach, Oliver Lucas. Other favorite sport is baseball. Member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. Post-college ambition is to teach and be a principal. Says the word that best describes him is "tenacious."
