Considered to be one of the leaders on the offensive line. A vocal, hard-working player. A smart young man who was very consistent last season. Gets the most out of his athletic ability. Really likes to mix it up in the trenches. Always gives a great effort.
1998 • Junior Season
Became the starting center at mid-season and started six games, including the Las Vegas Bowl. Played well in the bowl, despite suffering a leg injury in the first quarter. Had surgery following the bowl game to repair torn cartilage.
Started against Pittsburgh in week five and in each of the last five games. Saw action on 530 snaps. Played 50 or more snaps in six games. UNC rushed for 170 or more yards in three of his six games started.
1997• Sophomore Season
Played in five regular-season games a total of 47 snaps. Played against Indiana, Maryland, Texas Christian, Wake Forest, Duke and Virginia Tech in the Gator Bowl. Was top backup to two-time All-ACC center Jeff Saturday.
1996• Freshman Season
Saw action in four games as a backup at center. Played against Clemson, Wake Forest, Maryland and NC State. Was red-shirted in 1995.
Bergen Catholic High School
Offensive tackle at Bergen Catholic High School. Top blocker on a team that had 3,000 yards rushing and 1,400 yards passing his senior year. Team captain of a 10-1 squad which reached the state finals. Team won three Parochial A state titles in his four years with an overall record of 41-3. Coached by Fred Stengle.
Personal
Born Ryan Michael Carfley on March 2, 1977. Majoring in political science. Favorite pro teams are the New York Giants, New York Yankees. Favorite athlete is former Tar Heel Nate Hobgood-Chittick. Greatest athletic achievements are going 41-3 in high school, winning three state titles and beating NC State. The best thing about his position is running through the shoots with Coach Marshall. Post-college ambition is to work in sales. Says the word that best describes him is "perseverance.”Hobbies are fishing and playing pickup basketball.
