Recipient of a Morehead Scholarship, the top academic grant awarded at UNC. Multi-talented two-sport athlete. Electrifying presence on special teams. Can play a number of positions on either side of the ball. Has played tailback, wide receiver and cornerback and returned both kickoffs and punts for the Tar Heels. Set UNC record with a 100-yard kickoff return at Stanford. Has been hampered by injuries in both years playing football. Spent the summer playing for the United States Baseball National Team. ACC Honor Roll.
1998 • Sophomore Season
Played in seven regular-season contests. Sprained his right medial collateral ligament in the Pittsburgh game. Played on 77 snaps before the injury and just 27 the rest of the year. Missed three games after injuring his knee, returned for five plays at Virginia and 22 at Duke before re-injuring his knee. Played cornerback, tailback and returned kickoffs. Sparked Carolina at Stanford with a school-record 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. The return cut a 27-13 deficit in half. Became the fourth player in ACC history to return a kickoff 100 yards. The previous longest kickoff return in UNC history was a 98-yarder by Delbert Powell vs. Wake Forest in 1976. Had 179 kickoff return yards against Stanford, the second-highest single-game figure in Carolina history. Had three rushing attempts for three yards against Georgia Tech and six carries for three yards against Clemson. Played cornerback against Virginia and Duke.
1997• Freshman Season
Played in only one game. Returned five punts for an average of 6.2 yards against Wake Forest. Suffered a minor knee sprain in practice prior to the NC State game and was unable to play the rest of the year.
Carolina Baseball
One of the fastest players in college baseball. Named first-team All-ACC as a sophomore in 1999 when he led the Tar Heels in batting (.371), stolen bases (29) and triples (five) and shared the lead in base hits (82). Knocked in 58 runs and scored 56. Led the ACC in steals and was second in triples and ninth in batting average. In his two-year collegiate career, he has hit .362 (110 for 304) with 11 home runs, seven triples, 21 doubles and 30 stolen bases. Base-stealing photo was featured in Sports Illustrated.
East Bladen High School
The 1996-97 NCHSAA Player of the Year. Rushed 238 times for 2,060 yards and 30 touchdowns as a senior. Returned two kickoffs for touchdowns (95 and 90 yards) and scored on an 85-yard punt return. Rushed for 243 yards in the first round of the state playoffs. All-East Region and all-conference pick. Received the North Carolina Scholar-Athlete Award at the Shrine Bowl. Played for Coach Lenon Fisher. Also played safety and had 100 tackles, four interceptions and eight pass breakups. Was featured in a 1997 issue of Sports Illustrated for two-sport athletes. Hit .487 with six home runs and 13 steals as a junior and .497 with 18 home runs and 54 rbi as a senior.
