General: One of the top goalkeepers in the country...a strong candidate for national honors this season...possesses a career save percentage of .603 entering his senior year as a Tar Heel...has allowed only 8.41 goals per game in 41 career games...had a tremendous fall practice period this year and appears primed for a huge year in the goal as a senior...a preseason honorable mention All-America selection this year by Face-off Yearbook and Inside Lacrosse...three-year letterman who has started all but one game since he arrived at Carolina in 2002...was the first freshman to start in goal at UNC since Tom Sears in 1980 when he did so in 2002...enters this year with 525 career saves and is likely to eclipse the career saves record of 629 by Tom Sears (1980-83) sometime during the 2005 season...a transfer from Loyola College of Maryland which he attended during the 2000-01 school year but where he did not play lacrosse...was a Dean's List student there and won the school's French award...played for the Motters Lacrosse Club Team for one season while at Loyola.
2004 Season: Named All-America honorable mention status from the USILA...served as one of Carolina's co-captains with defenseman Ronnie Staines ... selected for the 2003-2004 ACC Academic Honor Roll, the third straight year he was named to the honor list ... winner of the UNC Athletic Director's Scholar-Athlete Award for the men's lacrosse teamas the team's top scholar-athlete...won the award as a junior...most winners of the award on various teams are seniors ... named the ACC Men's Lacrosse Player of the Week on April 12 after making 13 saves in an 11-9 win over Virginia, UNC's first victory over the Cavaliers since 2001...with UNC trailing the Cavaliers 7-6 in the third quarter of the game, Spellman made saves one nine successive shots on goal against him while the Tar Heels rattled off five straight goals, going on to win 11-9...also had five ground balls in the win over Virginia ... played 864 minutes for the Tar Heels in 15 games, 14 of them starting assignments ... hada career high 180 saves in the goal, giving him a save percentage of .596 on the season ... picked up 47 ground balls, second highest total for team ... opened the season in a 12-7 Tar Heel victory over No. 7 Massachusetts with 18 saves, while allowing only seven goals...sparked Carolina's win at Denver with a 14-save effort while allowing only six goals...against Air Force he made 12 saves while allowing only nine goals while also claiming four ground balls...had a key outing in UNC's win at Notre Dame as he racked up 17 saves while allowing only 11 goals...also scooped up four ground balls versus the Fighting Irish...did not start against Duke but played the last 46:03 against the Blue Devils, making 10 saves and allowing six goals...had six ground balls against Duke ...played 51 minutes against UMBC and made eight saves while allowing two goals...despite UNC's loss in the ACC semifinals, he had a 16-save effort in the game...had a great all-around effort against Ohio State in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament... made 13 saves while allowing only six goals...also claimed six ground balls in the game.
2003 Season: An honorable mention All-America selection by the USILA...had a magnificent sophomore year...played 785 minutes in 13 games, starting in every Tar Heel contest...he made 170 saves on the season and allowed a career-low 107 goals, a tremendous save percentage of .614, his career high for a season...allowed only 8.18 goals per game in 2003, also his career high for a season...had more saves than goals allowed in all but three contests...had a career high 25 saves against Maryland while allowing only six goals in a 10-6 win over the Terrapins...was named ACC Player of the Week for that effort...had 18 saves and allowed only eight goals at Ohio State and 18 saves while allowing only 10 goals in the regular season game against Virginia...was in double figures in saves in 10 contests...had a save percentage of .600 or above in seven games...led the team in ground balls with 56, winning with Holmes Harden Memorial Award in the process...had a season high eight ground balls against Virginia in the regular season and seven more in the ACC semifinals against Virginia as well as seven against Air Force...finished the season strong against Stony Brook (14svs, 7ga) and Air Force (12svs, 5ga)...was named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll for the second straight year...was named to the Dean's List both semesters of the 2002-03 school year.
2002 Season: Won the Turnbull Trophy as the most valuable player on the Tar Heel team...he was the first freshman in UNC history to ever win the MVP award...shared the Jay Gallagher Award as the outstanding freshman on the 2002 UNC lacrosse team...named to the All-Tournament Team at the 2002 ACC Tournament...was named the ACC Player of the Week on February 25, 2002 after making 12 saves and allowing only three goals in a win over Bucknell...played all but two minutes of the season in goal--a total of 811 minutes...made 175 saves and allowed 116 goals, a save percentage of .601...allowed an average of only 8.58 goals per game...had more saves than goals allowed in all 13 games...was in double figures in saves in every game...had a season high 18 saves against John Hopkins...had 17 saves against Fairfield and Hofstra, 15 against Ohio State and Virginia and 14 against UMBC...ranked second on the team in ground balls with 52...had a season high nine against Virginia and also eight against Maryland...also excelled in the classroom as he was named to the 2001-02 ACC Academic Honor Roll.
Prep: Graduated in June 2000 from St. Pauls School in Brooklandville, Md....played varsity lacrosse there for three years and varsity football for two years...named two-time honorable mention All-Metro by the Towson Times...as a senior in 2000 he was the team's defensive most valuable player and team captain...played in the 2000 Senior All-Star Game...led St. Pauls to state title game in 1998...an honors student and member of peer leadership group.
