General: A three-time returning letterman...returns as Carolina's top player at the long-stick midfielder position...will take over the No. 1 role there with Hayward Howard moving to close defense... younger brother of Tar Heel defenseman Ronnie Staines, who was a first-team All-America defenseman as a senior in 2004, and older brother of UNC junior midfielder Ben Staines.
2005 Season: Was once again one of Carolina's most consistent players...tied for second on the team in ground balls with 37, including four against Cornell...played in all 13 games for UNC and had two goals and two assists for four points...scored one of his goals against Virginia and had three ground balls against the Cavaliers...had his career high for ground balls with nine against Air Force...had assists against both UMBC and Colgate...had his second goal of the season against Duke in the ACC Tournament.
2004 Season: Played in all 15 games for the Tar Heels... finished with one goal and had 18 ground balls... contributed a goal in the Tar Heels' 11-9 regular-season win over defending national champion Virginia...that was his first career point in a Tar Heel uniform...the goal was the opening tally of the...picked up a season high four ground balls later that season in the ACC Tournament match-up against Virginia.
2003 Season: Played in all 13 games for the Tar Heels as a freshman...used primarily as a long stick defensive midfielder...proved to be a standout for the Tar Heels at the rope position...was penalized only one time the entire season...scooped up 21 ground balls including a season high six against Virginia in the ACC Tournament semifinals.
Prep: A first-team Baltimore Sun and Washington Post All-Metro selection in 2002 at the Severn School... as a senior defender, he scooped up an astonishing total of 121 ground balls, winning team's ground ball award...led the Admirals to their second consecutive A Conference playoff berth...was chosen the team's Most Valuable Player both as a junior and a senior...also named first-team All-Anne Arundel County by the Baltimore Sun as a junior and a senior... he was a three-year starter for the Admirals... played two years of varsity...was a safety and wide receiver for the Admirals' football team... was a finalist for the C. Markland Kelly Award in 2002 as the outstanding player in Maryland...named first-team All-County twice by the Annapolis Capital...tapped for the Washington Post All-Metro Team as a senior...2001 Free State Team selection...All-State selection, Bay State Team selection and Top 205 All-Star choice as well...named to the honor roll his senior year.
