General: A pre-season first-team All-America selection by Face-Off Yearbook and Inside Lacrosse Magazine in 2004 and being named a third-team pre-season All-America last year...has been one of the top defensemen in the country the past three seasons...has started all 38 games for the Tar Heels in his career on close defense...a 2000 first-team All-Metro selection by the Baltimore Sun in his senior year...was considered to be the leading defenseman in the MIAA "A" Conference along with St. Mary's Matt Pessagno as a senior in high school...Pessagno is also a Tar Heel and has started alongside Staines at UNC...named by Baltimore Sun to the 2000 All-Anne Arundel County Boys Lacrosse Team...an All-County pass receiver in football as a senior for the Severn School...a lanky player, he uses his height for an advantage as a takeaway artist and stingy close defenseman...drew the opponent's leading scorer on a game-in, game-out basis and held them to minimum goals or none at all while at the Severn School...limited the top scorers or playmakers from Boys' Latin, Loyola, St. Mary's, Calvert Hall, St. Paul's and Gilman to a combined five goals during his senior...regarded as having the best season of all defensemen in the MIAA "A" Conference as a senior despite Severn's five-win season and absence from postseason play.
2003 Season: A third-team Face-Off Yearbook pre-season All-America and honorable mention USILA post-season All-America selection as one of the nation's standout defensemen...started all 13 games for UNC, running his streak of starts at Carolina to 38 in a row...was among the team leaders in ground balls with 40, the most he has had in a single season...had a career high six ground balls in a game against Virginia in the regular season...committed only nine penalties all season.
2002 Season: Had another great season as a sophomore...started all 13 games for the Tar Heels at close defense, running his string of successive starts to 25 over the past two years...was among the team leaders in ground balls with 33...had a career high five ground balls against Ohio State and Virginia.
2001 Season: Was the recipient of the team's Jay Gallagher Award as the squad's most outstanding freshman player...started all 12 games for Carolina as a true freshman...finished fifth on the team with 29 ground balls...had two or more ground balls in every game but one...had a season high three ground balls on six occasions.
Prep: Graduated from the Severn School in Severna Park, Md. on June 10, 2000...a versatile athlete...coached in lacrosse by Jamie McNealy who said he had no problem playing Staines virtually anywhere on the field and expecting him to perform well there...garnered several honors as a football player and lacrosse star...played on the varsity lacrosse team for three years as a defenseman after being named junior varsity MVP as a freshman...named varsity MVP, first-team All-County, first team All-Metro, first-team All-State and was named to the Bay State All-Star Team as a defenseman...also a Top 205 All-Star Team selection...captain of lacrosse team as a senior...because of a lack of depth the Admirals often used Staines in the midfield, including on extra-man offense--where he scored two of his four goals as a senior...was also named first-team All-County and first-team All-Metro as a football player where he was a wide receiver and a defensive back.
Personal: Given name is Ronald Joseph Staines... has three brothers...Billy is a sophomore defenseman on the Tar Heels and Ben is a freshman midfielder.
